October was all about birthday fun in our house. The kids constant talk of conversation was how many more days until Jeremiah and Jackson's birthdays and what they wanted and how many more days until Hudson and Tirzah's birthdays (Tirzah just had hers in September). Finding a balance between honoring each child on their special day and warding off 'the gimmies' and a selfish spirit is not easy. I know it's so natural and normal for their ages, to want to talk and think about their own birthdays, rather than just celebrate their siblings' but when it's multiplied by 4, it gets a little old- real quick.
We've all been talking about and looking forward to our move to our current city for SO long it seems. The kids have all had very temporal living situations for the last year, which can be hard for kids to bear. By God's grace, they have bore it well, with great attitudes. But now that we are in our own home, finally all 7 of us together, it's been my hearts desire to nest and make it uniquely ours. (Including making it really fun for the kids.) So we held off buying some big things they have been wanting and steered sweet grandparents towards combined gifts that the kids will hopefully enjoy for a long time. We also purposely want them to learn to share and be giving, so sharing birthday gifts works towards that goal.
Jeremiah, was a lot less opinionated about his special day than Tirzah was. He was just glad it was his birthday and all he wanted was a dragon. Easy. Done! We anticipated this back in June and brought a Dragon from the U.S. We also opted for the easiest birthday party ever, holding it at KFC, with a few close friends and gladly paying 500 extra rupees ($8) for the private room and decorations. You can't beat that! We also took advantage of having an AMAZING cupcake place in our city and got a great assortment so everyone have the kind they like (Jeremiah isn't huge on sweets anyways; he just wanted the 'fire' to blow out). Our sweet boy does not like being in the lime light (also very different from his little sister). He was very timid and shy when it came time to sing Happy Birthday. But all in all, he had a great day and loved that he got to choose all the meals, complete with his favorite birthday dinner..."India food". He has also ridden miles on his scooter from Grandpa and shot countless baskets on their new basketball goal. He's quite the natural, making his first shot on his first try!
Jeremiah is kind, caring, fun loving, smart, helpful, and joyful! He loves every sport he has opportunity to try, dragons, and Superheroes. He loves to eat and does so like a grown man sometimes! We are still so in awe of all that God has done to bring Jeremiah and Tirzah into our family and how quickly we've all bonded together. This birthday was extra special because it was his first time to ever have it acknowledged and celebrated with us. We are so grateful to be his parents. We treasure him. And we are thankful for our good Father who has given Jeremiah life and is making him into the young man He wants him to be.
Jackson has known exactly what he wanted for his birthday for a year! He has sweetly dropped many not-so-subtle hints about how he really wants to learn to play the guitar, but how he knows that doesn't mean he will get one for his birthday..."but maybe". He's been very hopeful but careful to not be demanding or greedy. A true example of his growing maturity and sweet nature. We had a really great and easy birthday party for him as well. It was a New York style party complete with the best pizza in town, made by a true New Yorker-Gujarati and complete with amazing New York style cheesecake. (The grown ups at the party were all pleased with his choices!) Our tummies were full and we had great fellowship with friends from our new city and from out of town. Jackson's "dreams came true" on his birthday morning when he finally got his guitar. Daddy did a pretty great job of faking him out at first. He kept giving him small gifts of guitar accessories and nearly had him convinced they were going to build a guitar together with the accessories and some scrap wood. Jackson was trying so hard to not look disappointed but you could tell he was...until, Daddy said, "or you could just play this!" and pulled out his beautiful new guitar! He was so shocked and the faces he made were priceless! He's help up his end so far and has been practicing everyday. He's already started a band with his siblings, named it "The Fab 5," and given everyone their instrument assignments (including Deacon on the egg shaker). This has spurred on more birthday talk and wishes for a keyboard (Hudson) and drums (Jeremiah) for next year's birthdays.
Jackson has matured so much this year. All of a sudden he is no longer a "little kid." We are so very thankful to be his parents. He is a joy, a good helper, a great big brother, funny, smart, loves to read, loves to play any sport/game/activity, is enthusiastic about life in general, loves to try new things and foods, is incredibly out going, loves the Lord and loves to sing worship songs to Him! He is excited to be 7. One of the things he looks forward to most is getting to go on work trips with his dad, just the two of them. He's a great cook and loves to invent his own recipes. Just a few weeks back I woke up late and he had made egg-less waffles ALL BY HIMSELF! (eggless only because we were out of eggs). They were actually pretty good--like waffle shaped soft pretzels. He is always entertaining and inquisitive. I love being his mom.
